ALABAMA — A Guatemalan man has been arrested and charged with assault and driving under the influence following a Christmas Day crash in Florence that left two people injured, according to police.

The Florence Police Department said 36-year-old Martin Jimenez Miranda of Guatemala was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, third-degree assault and DUI after a two-vehicle wreck on Dec. 25.

Officers responded to the crash at the intersection of Florence Boulevard and Broadway Street, where they found a female driver and a juvenile girl trapped inside one of the vehicles. Police said both were rescued, and authorities determined that one of the occupants had suffered serious injuries.

Police said officers also located the second vehicle involved in the crash and identified the driver as Miranda. According to the department, officers observed signs of impairment and conducted an investigation that led to his arrest.

Miranda was transported to the Lauderdale County Detention Center. His bond was set at $8,000, but police said he remains in custody due to a hold placed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The crash remains under investigation.
