INDIANA — A man was taken into custody Tuesday following an hours-long SWAT standoff in Richmond, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were investigating the theft of several brass urns from a local cemetery when they located some of the stolen property inside a truck parked outside a home on South 11th Street.

Authorities believed the suspect, identified as Joshua Farmer, was inside the residence. Farmer had active felony theft warrants, officials said. Another person inside the home told deputies they were unsure if Farmer was there.

Deputies issued repeated commands, but Farmer refused to come out. Richmond SWAT officers later found him hiding in the attic after several hours.

Farmer was arrested and evaluated by emergency medical personnel. He was transported to Reid Health for further evaluation, though his current condition has not been released.

Once discharged, Farmer will be taken to the Wayne County Jail. No further details were immediately available.
