NORTH CAROLINA — A Vanceboro man has been arrested following a reported robbery at a laundromat in New Bern, according to police.

The New Bern Police Department said officers responded around 7:24 a.m. to Broad Street Laundry on Broad Street in reference to an armed robbery. Authorities said the suspect took money from an employee and fled the scene on foot.

Officers arrived within minutes and obtained a description of the suspect. About 15 minutes later, police located a man in the Craven Terrace area who matched that description.

Police identified the suspect as 57-year-old Michael Jenkins of Vanceboro. Investigators said Jenkins was determined to be responsible for the robbery. Although he was not armed at the time of his arrest, officers said they recovered money matching the denominations reported stolen.

Jenkins has been charged with common law robbery and assault on a female.

He was taken before a magistrate and placed in the Craven County Detention Facility without bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for April 9 at 9 a.m. in Craven County District Court.
