NORTH CAROLINA — A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody Monday night following a high-speed police chase involving a stolen vehicle in the Raleigh area, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the incident began around 10:30 p.m. when a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for running a stop sign at the intersection of West River Road and Simms Bridge Road. After running the license plate, the deputy learned the vehicle had been reported stolen. When deputies attempted to stop the car, the driver fled.
Authorities said stop sticks were deployed by Franklin County deputies and were successful, but the chase continued southbound on U.S. 1 Capital Boulevard. Officers with the Wake Forest Police Department later attempted to deploy stop sticks as well, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
The pursuit ended near Thornton Road when the stolen vehicle struck another vehicle. Police said the teen attempted to flee the scene on foot but was taken into custody after a brief chase.
No injuries were reported as a result of the pursuit or the crash.
The 16-year-old is facing charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and assault on a government official. Authorities said the assault charge stems from allegations that the driver attempted to intentionally strike a deputy with the stolen vehicle during the chase. The incident remains under investigation.
