NORTH CAROLINA — An 18-year-old Enfield man was arrested Sunday after leading law enforcement on an eight-mile vehicle pursuit, authorities reported.

Around 2:45 p.m., a Pitt County deputy responding to an emergency call on MLK Jr. Highway near Staton Road observed a vehicle driving recklessly.

The deputy attempted to stop the car after reclassifying the call as non-emergency, but the driver fled. With assistance from ECU Police, the pursuit ended near Saint Peter’s Catholic School when the vehicle wrecked and became disabled.

The driver, identified as Y’Motti Ar’marion Powell, jumped from the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended on the school campus. No injuries or other vehicles were involved.

Powell was charged with multiple offenses, including felony fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving, excessive speeding, resisting an officer, hit-and-run property damage, and possession of marijuana under two ounces. His vehicle was seized under North Carolina’s “Run and Done” law.

Powell appeared before a magistrate and was released on a $15,000 secured bond.
