KENTUCKY — A Bardstown man is facing multiple charges following a police pursuit that began with a traffic stop early Saturday morning in Nelson County.
According to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 1:40 a.m. to reports of a reckless driver on New Shepherdsville Road. Deputies located a vehicle driven by 28-year-old Juan Carlos Perez near Houghlin Funeral Home and attempted a traffic stop.
Authorities said Perez was slow to respond but eventually stopped. Deputies ordered him to exit the vehicle, but Perez fled southbound on New Shepherdsville Road, initiating a brief pursuit.
The chase ended at the intersection of East John Rowan Boulevard and Springfield Road, where Perez’s vehicle struck a snow embankment and came to a stop.
Police said Perez then ran from the vehicle on foot, jumping a barbed-wire fence. Deputies pursued him and were injured while crossing the fence but were able to take Perez into custody after a short struggle.
Deputies reported that Perez was highly intoxicated at the time of his arrest and told officers he fled because he did not want to return to Mexico.
Perez was charged with speeding, driving under the influence, fleeing or evading police by vehicle, fleeing or evading police on foot, wanton endangerment, and reckless driving.
He is being held at the Nelson County Detention Center on a $10,000 cash bond and is scheduled to appear in Nelson District Court on Feb. 24.
