KENTUCKY — A Monticello man is in custody following an overnight crime spree that included multiple stolen vehicles, an attempted ambulance theft, and an alleged attempt to run over a bystander, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began around 11:30 p.m. Thursday when dispatchers received a report of a man trying to steal an ambulance at Wayne County Hospital. The suspect was unsuccessful but fled the scene in a stolen vehicle.
About 15 minutes later, deputies responded to a home on O.P. Link Road, where another vehicle had been stolen.
The suspect, identified as Anthony Dykes of Monticello, allegedly entered the home asking to use a phone before taking the vehicle.
Later that night, deputies received a report from East Kentucky Highway 790, where Dykes reportedly asked for money and attempted to enter another vehicle on the property.
While patrolling the area, deputies were flagged down by a man who said he had stopped to help someone he believed had crashed.
The man told deputies that Dykes stole his vehicle and then turned around in the roadway, accelerating toward him in what appeared to be an attempt to run him over.
Monticello Police located Dykes walking along West Columbia Avenue shortly before 2:30 a.m. Friday. One of the stolen vehicles was recovered nearby, and another was found abandoned off Highway 790.
Dykes was arrested and charged with three counts of theft by unlawful taking of a vehicle valued between $10,000 and $1,000,000 and one count of attempted murder.
He is being held at the Wayne County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.
