SOUTH CAROLINA — A man is facing multiple charges after what began as a shoplifting arrest at a Walmart in Florence turned into a large drug bust, according to police.

The Florence Police Department said officers responded Wednesday to the Walmart on Beltline Road, where they arrested 38-year-old Stephen Gottshall of Lexington. He was charged with shoplifting, trafficking methamphetamine, and possession of MDMA.

During the arrest, officers found 36 grams of methamphetamine on Gottshall. A subsequent search warrant for his vehicle uncovered an additional 1,045 grams of crystal meth, 0.5 grams of MDMA, and 20 grams of marijuana.

Gottshall is being held at the Florence County Detention Center. His bond was set at $1,000 for shoplifting and $25,000 for the MDMA charge. No bond has been set on the methamphetamine trafficking charge.
