OHIO — A routine traffic stop led to the discovery of more than 48 grams of methamphetamine hidden inside a fake oil can Sunday morning, according to Springfield Township police.
Around 11:39 a.m., Officer Jon McKenzie and his K9 partner, Rex, pulled over the driver of a Dodge Ram on Massillon Road near Krumroy Road after observing multiple traffic violations.
Police said the driver, identified as 49-year-old Robert Butterbaugh of Norton, denied consent to search his vehicle. K9 Rex was then deployed for an open-air sniff and alerted to the presence of narcotics on the driver’s side of the truck.
During the search, officers located a fake oil can containing methamphetamine, along with drug paraphernalia, pills, and packaging materials.
Butterbaugh was taken to the Summit County Jail and charged with trafficking in drugs, possession of drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
“We commend Officer McKenzie and K9 Rex for their exceptional teamwork and vigilance in keeping dangerous drugs off our streets,” the department said in a Facebook post.
