OHIO — A Bellefontaine man was taken into custody early Thursday morning after police say a traffic stop led to the discovery of suspected cocaine.
According to Bellefontaine Police, officers spotted a tan Buick driven by David Taggart, 36, shortly after midnight near the intersection of West Sandusky Avenue and North Elm Street.
Officers recognized Taggart and knew he did not have a valid driver’s license. They also noted the vehicle’s registration was improper and listed as fictitious.
When officers activated their emergency lights, the Buick briefly drove over a curb and into a backyard near Taggart’s residence before stopping. Taggart told police he had been returning from picking up the vehicle after it allegedly overheated.
A K9 unit, Pyro, was called to the scene and alerted officers to the presence of narcotics inside the car.
A search uncovered a small amount of white powder believed to be cocaine in the passenger-side dashboard, along with rolling papers. Police say Taggart admitted the rolling papers were his.
Taggart was arrested and taken to the Logan County Jail, where he faces one count of possession of drugs. Police noted it was his second drug-related arrest in recent weeks.
