
ILLINOIS — A Springfield man is facing multiple drug charges following his arrest during an ongoing narcotics investigation, according to the Springfield Police Department.
Gary E. Freeman, 49, was taken into custody Thursday after officers from the department’s Pro-Active Crime Unit served search warrants on his home, vehicle, and storage unit. All warrants were executed without incident.
During the searches, police seized:
- 33 bags of suspected fentanyl totaling 21.3 grams (.75 ounces)
- 26 bags of suspected cocaine totaling 15.09 grams (.53 ounces)
- 28.5 grams (1 ounce) of suspected methamphetamine
- A large sum of U.S. currency
Freeman was booked into the Sangamon County Jail on a preliminary charge of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
The Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office has since filed six formal charges against him, including:
- One Class X felony count of manufacturing and delivering a controlled substance
- One Class X felony count of manufacturing and delivering methamphetamine
- One Class 1 felony count of manufacturing and delivering a controlled substance
- One Class 1 felony count of possession of methamphetamine
- Two Class 4 felony counts of possession of a controlled substance
Freeman made his initial court appearance on Wednesday, where a judge denied him pretrial release. He is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on August 7.
