OHIO — A man from Piqua was arrested Tuesday evening after officers discovered suspected cocaine during a welfare check in Bellefontaine.

According to authorities, officers responded around 6:51 p.m. to the Walmart parking lot along U.S. 68 South after receiving a report of two men sitting in a red Cadillac parked away from other vehicles.

Police said when officers approached, they observed the occupants moving around inside the vehicle before becoming still. The driver, identified as 62-year-old Keith Lance, provided his driver’s license. The passenger, identified as 25-year-old James Myers, did not have a license but provided identifying information. Officers also noted Myers appeared nervous and was handling a backpack.

Due to the behavior, a K9 unit was requested. After both men exited the vehicle and were patted down, the K9 alerted to the driver’s side area.

A subsequent search revealed a white powdery substance on the driver’s seat that field-tested positive for cocaine. Police said a similar substance was also found on Lance’s clothing and tested positive.

Lance was arrested on a charge of possession of cocaine and transported to the Logan County Jail. The vehicle was towed as part of the investigation.

No additional charges have been announced at this time.
