SOUTH CAROLINA — A 16-year-old was arrested Sunday evening after a traffic stop led officers to discover drugs and a stolen firearm, according to the North Charleston Police Department.

Police said officers were patrolling near Dorchester Road and South Allen Drive when they noticed a vehicle with illegal window tint. As officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver turned onto South Allen Drive and pulled into a Cheapway gas station on Dorchester Road.

Officers approached the vehicle, which had four occupants inside, and reported smelling marijuana. All occupants were asked to exit the vehicle.

According to the report, officers observed a clear bag partially hanging from one occupant’s pocket that appeared to contain narcotics. The bag contained about 5.1 grams of green plant material consistent with marijuana, which later tested presumptive positive for THC and fentanyl.

While conducting a frisk, officers located a Glock .22 caliber handgun in the juvenile’s waistband. Police said a records check revealed the firearm had been reported stolen in North Charleston.

The teen was charged with simple possession of marijuana, receiving stolen goods valued at $2,000 or less, unlawful possession of a handgun and resisting arrest.

Police said the suspect attempted to escape after being placed in handcuffs but was restrained by officers. The juvenile was transported to the Charleston County Department of Juvenile Justice.
