MARYLAND — A Stevensville man was arrested on drug and firearm charges following a traffic stop in a school zone, according to the Queen Anne’s County Office of the Sheriff.

Deputies arrested 61-year-old James Brown on charges of possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute near a school, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and related drug and traffic offenses.

Authorities said the incident occurred at approximately 9:55 a.m. on Feb. 24. Deputy First Class Schultz was in the area of Route 8 and Camp Wright Lane when he observed a vehicle traveling 56 miles per hour in a 40 mile-per-hour zone. The deputy initiated a traffic stop on Route 8 near the Matapeake School Complex.

During the stop, DFC Schultz identified the driver as Brown and observed that the vehicle’s windows were heavily tinted. A tint meter test reportedly showed a reading of 15.

A K-9 unit was called to the scene to conduct a scan of the vehicle. After the K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics, deputies conducted a probable cause search. Deputy First Class Kendall located a loaded semi-automatic handgun in the center console.

During a search of Brown’s person, deputies found 88 oxycodone pills in a clear plastic bag and drug paraphernalia. Brown was taken into custody without further incident.
