GEORGIA — A South Carolina man was arrested late Friday after fleeing from a traffic stop in Hart County, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said the incident began just before midnight on Aug. 22 during a safety check at the new four-way stop on Lavonia Highway at Junction 77 Road and Providence Church Road. A white Honda Ridgeline fled the intersection, and deputies attempted a traffic stop.

The driver, later identified as 53-year-old Michael Gibert of Anderson County, refused to stop and led deputies north on Providence Church Road before entering I-85 northbound toward South Carolina.

As deputies prepared to terminate the chase near the state line bridge, the Ridgeline struck another vehicle. No injuries were reported, and the crash caused only minor damage.

Gibert was taken into custody and booked into the Hart County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including felony fleeing, DUI, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, criminal attempt to possess marijuana, open container, speeding, and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Deputies said Gibert was also wanted on active warrants in both Hart County and Anderson County, South Carolina. The case remains under investigation.
