OHIO — A Wapakoneta man was arrested late Christmas Eve on charges of operating a vehicle under the influence after a traffic stop on U.S. Route 33, according to the Bellefontaine Police Department.
Officers said the stop occurred around 11 p.m. when a pickup truck was clocked traveling 86 miles per hour in a 70 mph zone near State Route 540. After passing a marked patrol car, the vehicle continued at a high rate of speed and was observed weaving within its lane and crossing lane markings.
Police initiated a traffic stop near the U.S. 68 overpass, where the driver pulled over to the left side of the roadway. The driver was identified as Zachary Fontaine, 25, of Wapakoneta.
During the stop, officers reported smelling alcoholic beverages coming from inside the vehicle. Fontaine told officers he had consumed a shot and a mixed drink earlier in the evening and also admitted to using a marijuana vape a couple of hours before driving. He later failed several field sobriety tests and was arrested for OVI.
Fontaine was transported to the Bellefontaine Police Department, where he agreed to a breath test. Police said his breath alcohol concentration measured .151, nearly twice the legal limit.
Fontaine was cited for speeding and OVI and was ordered to appear in Bellefontaine Municipal Court. His vehicle was towed from the scene.
