TENNESSEE — A man has been charged after police say he shot a friend who showed up unannounced at his home early Thursday morning in Memphis.

According to the Memphis Police Department, the incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Royal Oaks Drive in the Whitehaven area.

Investigators said the victim had been walking from a store on Winchester Road and decided to stop by a friend’s home without notifying him. The victim told police he knocked on the front door and was then shot.

Authorities said the homeowner later admitted to shooting through the front door. He told officers he sells drugs and said he was fearful of being robbed again, adding that his “nerves are on edge,” according to police.

Police said the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Kordarius Owens, later apologized and asked about the victim’s condition.

The victim was transported to a hospital and is expected to survive, officials said.

Owens has been charged with aggravated assault and convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

The investigation remains ongoing.
