FLORIDA — A woman was arrested over the weekend after police say she fired a gun inside her ex-husband’s home and fled with their 9-month-old child.
According to the Niceville Police Department, Shaniyah Monah Carmichael went to her ex-husband’s home around 4 a.m. and forced her way into a bedroom while armed with a gun.
Police said a struggle occurred, during which the gun discharged once. The bullet struck the ceiling in the direction of the room where the couple’s 9-month-old son was located.
Authorities said Carmichael then allegedly took the child and ran from the home.
Officers later located Carmichael at a residence in Shalimar, Florida, where she was taken into custody. The child was also found at the home and was safely returned to the father.
Investigators said a firearm recovered from the Shalimar residence is believed to be the weapon used in the incident.
Carmichael faces several charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, child neglect, battery, and firing a weapon on residential property.
The investigation remains ongoing.
