OHIO — A 27-year-old man with eight active warrants was arrested Tuesday after stealing a car and leading Akron Police on a chase that ended in a serious crash, according to a department release.
Police said the incident began around 3:14 p.m. when officers responded to a Circle K in the 1600 block of East Avenue for a report of a stolen vehicle.
The car’s owner told police he had left the vehicle running while briefly entering the store, and an unknown suspect drove off with it.
An officer later spotted the stolen car pulling into a parking lot in the 1300 block of Vernon Odom Boulevard. When police attempted a traffic stop, the suspect continued driving eastbound, prompting a pursuit.
The chase ended when the suspect ran a red light at Vernon Odom Boulevard and Superior Avenue, colliding with another vehicle.
Police identified the suspect as Brandon Davis, 27, and the other driver as a 42-year-old man. Both suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital, police said.
Investigators later learned Davis had eight active warrants from multiple jurisdictions. He was charged with felony theft of a motor vehicle, and police said additional charges may be pending.
The Akron Police Department’s accident reconstruction unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
