One person arrested after foot chase leads to large fentanyl bust in North Carolina

NORTH CAROLINA — A Spindale man was arrested after a foot chase that led investigators to a large amount of fentanyl in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

Authorities said Chawnteat McEntire, also known as “Shawn Mac,” was taken into custody Wednesday after running from deputies during an investigation into fentanyl distribution.

What happened

  • Deputies with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office ACE Team and the Tri-City Violent Crimes Task Force were investigating fentanyl sales.
  • Officers found McEntire in the parking lot of a Dollar General on Railroad Avenue.
  • When deputies attempted to talk with him, McEntire and another man ran through a trail toward an apartment complex.
  • One person was detained immediately, but McEntire continued running before he was eventually caught.

What investigators found

After retracing the path McEntire ran, deputies located a pouch belonging to him that contained:

  • 26.54 grams of fentanyl packaged in 26 separate baggies
  • 0.76 grams of methamphetamine
  • 5 grams of marijuana
  • $512 in cash

Charges

McEntire now faces several felony charges, including:

  • Fentanyl trafficking
  • Possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver methamphetamine and marijuana
  • Resisting a public officer
  • Drug activity within 1,000 feet of a park

He was denied bond because of other pending charges at the time of his arrest.
