ALABAMA — A Hartselle man has been arrested following a home invasion and robbery in Limestone County, authorities said.

According to the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around midnight Wednesday to the 18000 block of Highway 99 after receiving reports of a home invasion and shots fired.

Investigators said 31-year-old Tanner Stewart Phillips initially broke into a vehicle at the residence before the situation escalated. When confronted by the homeowner, Phillips allegedly pointed a rifle at the resident and chased him into the house.

Deputies said the homeowner then fired multiple shots, striking Phillips. The suspect fled the scene and later arrived at Decatur-Morgan Hospital with gunshot wounds.

Authorities said Phillips was wearing a ski mask and a bulletproof vest and was armed with both a rifle and a pistol. Both weapons were recovered during the investigation.

After being released from the hospital, Phillips was arrested and charged with unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle, first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary. He is being held at the Limestone County Jail. Bond has not yet been set.

Limestone County Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin praised the homeowner’s actions, saying the case demonstrates how a lawfully armed citizen can protect their family. He added that no lives were lost and credited investigators for making the arrest.
