One person arrested after 36 pounds of marijuana found in luggage at Florida airport

FLORIDA — A California man was arrested after authorities said they discovered more than 36 pounds of marijuana in his luggage at Miami International Airport.

According to authorities, 23-year-old Jeremiah King Salas, of Perris, California, was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with cannabis trafficking.

Officials said agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection were inspecting outbound luggage due to an increase in narcotics being smuggled out of the United States when they identified several suspicious bags tied to Salas.

Investigators reported finding multiple vacuum-sealed packages inside the luggage containing a green leafy substance that later tested positive for marijuana. The total weight was approximately 16.48 kilograms, or just over 36 pounds.

Authorities said Salas was stopped before boarding a flight to London and was arrested at the airport.

Officials noted the case is part of a recent trend of drug trafficking arrests at Miami International Airport, including several similar incidents involving large quantities of marijuana being transported in luggage.

The investigation remains ongoing.
