KENTUCKY — A hiker has died following a fall in the Red River Gorge, officials confirmed.
Powell County Search & Rescue said emergency crews were called around 4 p.m. Saturday to Whittleton Arch, where a person had fallen roughly 40 feet from the top of the arch onto rocks below.
Officials reported that the hiker was alert but critically injured when first responders arrived. After a difficult rescue through rugged terrain, the individual was transported to the Middlefork Fire Department and airlifted by helicopter to UK Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The hiker’s identity has not yet been released.
