OHIO — Spartanburg, SC-based Yu Shang Food, Inc. is recalling approximately 72,240 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
This recall expands on a previous notice issued on November 9, 2024.
The recall includes all RTE products produced before October 28, 2024. These items bear the establishment number “P-46684” or “EST. M46684” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
They were distributed to retail locations nationwide and sold online.
The contamination was discovered during routine FSIS testing on October 21, 2024. Further analysis confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in both products and environmental samples collected at the facility.
Whole genome sequencing is being conducted to determine whether the contamination matches a strain linked to an illness cluster.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there are currently ten people sick from the outbreak including 7 in California, 2 in Illinois, and 1 in New York.
One infant in California has died due to the illness.
The Ohio Department of Health encourages the public to report a problem with food online.
Risks of Listeria Contamination
Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a severe infection that primarily affects older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women.
Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headaches, confusion, and gastrointestinal issues. In pregnant women, listeriosis can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, or life-threatening infections in newborns.
Anyone who has consumed the recalled products and experiences flu-like symptoms within two months should contact their healthcare provider.
Consumer Guidance
Consumers should check their refrigerators and freezers for the recalled products. These items should not be consumed and should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.
