Ohio woman flown to hospital following head-on crash with truck

UNITY TOWNSHIP — A woman from East Palestine sustained life-threatening injuries in a head-on collision on State Route 165 Friday afternoon, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Ashley Irizarry, 35, was driving her Nissan Pathfinder when a semi-tractor trailer, driven by 39-year-old Matthew Bertolette of Columbiana, crossed into her lane and collided with her vehicle.

The impact was so severe that Irizarry’s SUV was pushed into another vehicle behind her, driven by 20-year-old Sela Guy, also from East Palestine.

Irizarry was trapped in the wreckage and had to be rescued by local firefighters before being flown to a hospital in Youngstown for treatment.

Bertolette and Guy were not injured, according to authorities.

State Troopers reported that Bertolette was distracted at the time of the crash.

The accident temporarily closed State Route 165 between Route 14 and the Mahoning County Line, though the road has since reopened.
