Ohio shooting suspect arrested by U.S. Marshals

OHIO — A suspect accused of firing at Akron police officers during a traffic stop early Tuesday morning has been arrested.

Jon Tae Von Angelo Nelson, 30, was taken into custody without incident Wednesday afternoon by the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.

His arrest follows a multi-agency effort to locate him after he allegedly opened fire on officers and fled the scene.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. Tuesday at Vernon Odom Boulevard and Tyler Street.

According to Brian Lucey, president of the Akron Fraternal Order of Police, officers had pulled over Nelson’s vehicle and were approaching on foot when he allegedly shot at them through his window before speeding away.

A four-year veteran of the Akron Police Department returned fire, but neither officer was injured. It remains unclear whether Nelson was struck.

Police later identified the suspect’s vehicle as a silver Ford F-150 XLT with Ohio license plate PND-1016 and issued a statewide alert.

As per department policy, the officer who fired his weapon has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Nelson faces multiple charges, including felonious assault on a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon, improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, and failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik urged anyone with additional information on the case to come forward.
