Ohio Senate passes bill to restrict recreational marijuana usage

OHIO — The Ohio Senate passed legislation Wednesday that would impose stricter regulations on recreational marijuana in the state.

Senate Bill 56, which cleared the chamber by a 23-9 vote, introduces new limits on home cultivation, product potency, and public use.

Supporters of the bill, primarily Republican lawmakers, argue that the changes provide better oversight of marijuana testing, packaging, and advertising while preventing exposure to children.

Opponents, mostly Democrats, contend that the bill goes too far and undermines the will of Ohio voters, who approved recreational marijuana legalization in 2023.

If enacted, the legislation would reduce the number of marijuana plants allowed for home cultivation from 12 to six.

It would also restrict marijuana use to private residences, prohibiting smoking or vaping in public.

The bill seeks to lower the maximum THC concentration from 90% to 70% and cap the number of dispensaries statewide at 350.

Additionally, it includes a ban on marketing marijuana products in ways that appeal to children.

The measure now moves to the Ohio House of Representatives, where lawmakers may propose changes before a final vote.
