OHIO — Celina City Schools canceled several elementary school bus routes Friday afternoon as strong winds swept through Mercer County, creating hazardous travel conditions.
School officials made the decision after the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office advised the district to keep buses off the roads because of the dangerous weather. Officials said powerful winds were reducing visibility and making it unsafe for buses to operate normally.
Because of the cancellations, parents and guardians were asked to pick up their children from Celina Elementary School as soon as possible.
District officials also reminded families that students can only leave the school with individuals listed as approved contacts unless the school receives permission from a parent or guardian.
The Mercer County Sheriff said blowing dust from the strong winds has created “whiteout” conditions in some areas, significantly reducing visibility and contributing to several crashes across the county.
Local authorities continue to monitor conditions as high winds move through the region. Officials urge drivers and residents to remain cautious while traveling and to stay updated on weather and safety advisories.
