OHIO — A Franklin County environmental court has ordered the closure of Aura, a downtown Columbus nightclub, for one year due to repeated violations and a history of violence.
The ruling takes effect Thursday, with Columbus police executing the closure order at 205 N. 5th Street.
Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein announced the decision, highlighting that Aura, formerly known as Avalon, generated nearly 80 police and fire calls since January 2023.
These included incidents such as a deadly shooting in June 2024, reports of shots fired, assaults, fights, burglaries, intoxication complaints, and theft.
The nightclub was also cited for failing to comply with court orders, including the employment of properly licensed security personnel and the hiring of special duty officers during its operating hours.
As part of the court’s ruling:
- Aura’s liquor license will be held by the Ohio Division of Liquor Control during the closure.
- The nightclub has been added to the Columbus Property Action Team’s 2024 liquor license renewal objection list, with Columbus City Council set to vote on the matter by year-end. If approved, the objection will be submitted to the Division of Liquor Control in early 2025.
In addition, the nightclub’s owners face a $5,000 fine for contempt of court and must meet with Columbus police and any assigned special duty officers to discuss safety protocols before any future reopening.
