Ohio man sentenced to 18 years for multiple robberies

OHIO — Timothy Hyatt, 36, of Akron, has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for a string of armed robberies committed between December 2023 and January 2024.

U.S. District Judge Charles Fleming handed down the sentence after Hyatt pleaded guilty to four counts of interference with commerce by robbery and two counts of using, carrying, and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.

Court documents reveal that Hyatt targeted four businesses, threatening employees with a loaded firearm.

During one robbery, Hyatt exchanged gunfire with an employee who was armed. Hyatt was shot in the altercation and fled the scene but was later treated for his injuries at a local hospital.

After his treatment, Hyatt was taken into custody by Akron Police, read his Miranda rights, and confessed to the robberies.

The businesses involved were:

  • Panera Bread, Cuyahoga Falls (Dec. 19, 2023)
  • Sav-a-Lot, Akron (Dec. 27, 2023)
  • Game Stop, Akron (Dec. 29, 2023)
  • Taco Bell, Akron (Jan. 1, 2024)

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Akron Police Department, and the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Dangelo prosecuted the case on behalf of the Northern District of Ohio.
