STEUBEN COUNTY, IN — A 91-year-old Ohio man was killed in a head-on collision Saturday evening on U.S. 20, just west of Angola.
According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, Lester Merkle, of Ohio City, Ohio, was driving west on U.S. 20 around 6:40 p.m. when his SUV drifted left of center, colliding with an oncoming pickup truck.
The driver of the pickup attempted to avoid the crash but was unable to do so.
Merkle was pronounced dead at the scene. The pickup driver was transported to a local hospital and later airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital for further treatment.
