Ohio Legislature passes “Parents’ Bill of Rights” bill

State Rep. D.J. Swearingen (R-Huron)

OHIO — The Parents’ Bill of Rights, a key piece of legislation for the 135th General Assembly, is now awaiting Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s signature.

The bill’s sponsor, State Representative D.J. Swearingen (R-Huron), announced the development this week.

The legislation aims to empower parents by requiring schools to inform them of any mental, emotional, or physical health-related changes in their child.

It is designed to ensure that parents maintain authority over the upbringing, education, healthcare, and mental health of their minor children.

“It is critical that parents have a seat at the table when it comes to their children, and this legislation encourages parents and schools to partner together for the wellbeing of our children,” Swearingen said.

The bill also includes measures to clarify and limit the scope of some provisions in the original proposal.

Additionally, it requires school districts to adopt a religious release time policy.

The Parents’ Bill of Rights now awaits action by Governor DeWine.
