NORTH CAROLINA — A husband and wife from Cleveland, Ohio, were killed and two of their children injured in a single-vehicle crash Friday afternoon along Interstate 85/40 in Orange County.
The crash happened just before 1:20 p.m. near U.S. 70 at mile marker 161, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the N.C. Department of Transportation.
Investigators said a 2018 Honda Odyssey went off the right side of the highway, struck several trees, went down an embankment, and hit a large tree.
The front-seat passenger, Maria Nunney, 50, died at the scene. Her husband, 55-year-old Donald Nunney, who was driving, was airlifted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill but later died from his injuries.
Two children, a 9-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, were in the back seat and taken to a nearby hospital. Authorities said both remained alive as of Sunday.
The highway was closed for more than an hour after the crash. Troopers said initial reports of the van catching fire were incorrect. The incident remains under investigation.
