NORTH CAROLINA — A school district in eastern North Carolina shifted to remote learning this week after reporting a high number of illnesses among students and staff.
Pamlico County Schools announced the change on Wednesday, Dec. 17, stating that all PreK-8 schools in the district would move to a remote schedule through Thursday, Dec. 18.
According to the district’s calendar, Friday, Dec. 19, is scheduled as an early dismissal day, with Christmas break set to begin the following Monday.
“This decision is being made out of an abundance of caution to support the health of our students and staff,” the district said in a public statement.
District officials said Pamlico County High School would remain open for in-person instruction, and the existing exam schedule would not change. Only students who have scheduled exams were required to report to campus.
Pamlico County Schools did not specify what type of illness led to the temporary shift to remote learning. The move, however, came the same day state health officials confirmed the first pediatric flu-related death of the current flu season.
