NORTH CAROLINA — Several school districts in Western North Carolina will not hold in-person classes on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2025, due to winter weather conditions affecting the region.
Multiple counties reported icy roads and hazardous travel, prompting officials to move to remote learning or cancel traditional classes altogether.
Avery County Schools, Mitchell County Schools and Yancey County Schools will operate through remote learning, meaning students will complete schoolwork online rather than reporting to school buildings. Mayland Community College also announced it will conduct classes remotely on Tuesday, continuing its schedule despite the weather.
Meanwhile, Madison County Schools will be closed, though the district designated the day as an optional work day for staff. In addition, McDowell Transit announced a two-hour delay and said buses will not run on icy roads, affecting transportation availability for students and residents throughout the county.
School administrators urge families to follow district alerts for any further changes should weather conditions worsen.
