NORTH CAROLINA — Several school districts across northwestern North Carolina will operate on delayed schedules Tuesday, December 2, due to icy conditions and continued winter weather concerns.
Alleghany, Avery, and Wilkes County Schools will open two hours late. Elkin City Schools, Millennium Charter Academy, Mount Airy City Schools, Surry County Schools, and Yadkin County Schools will also operate on a two-hour delay Tuesday morning.
Mayland Community College announced it will open two hours late as well.
Ashe County Schools will shift to virtual learning for the day, designating Tuesday as a remote learning day.
Some mountain districts are implementing additional safety measures. Madison County Schools, Mitchell County Schools, and Yancey County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay with no buses running on icy roads, advising families to use caution when traveling.
School officials encourage parents and students to monitor local updates and school communications for any changes and to allow extra time for travel as road conditions remain hazardous in higher elevations.
