North Carolina school closings and delays for Thursday

0

NORTH CAROLINA — Public school officials across North Carolina have announced a mix of closures, delays and continued remote learning for Thursday as communities deal with lingering impacts of winter storms that hit the state late last week.

Several districts in the Piedmont Triad area and beyond have adjusted schedules for Thursday, Feb. 5, due to ongoing concerns about road conditions and safety for students and staff, according to information compiled from multiple local school systems.

In specific updates for Thursday:

  • Mount Airy City Schools will open on a two-hour delay
  • The Randolph County School System has designated the day as a remote learning day for students.
  • Stokes County Schools will remain closed Thursday.

Some districts that were severely affected earlier in the week had previously shifted to remote instruction or delayed schedules as crews continued clearing snow and ice from secondary roads.

Meanwhile, larger systems like Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools plan to resume a regular in-person scheduleThursday, marking the first such full day since before the storm, though officials reminded families that weather and road conditions can still affect travel and buses may operate with caution.

The wave of winter weather that prompted school disruptions came from powerful systems that brought heavy snowfall and hazardous conditions across much of the state in recent days, including historically significant snow in parts of western and central North Carolina.

Parents and students are advised to check with their local school districts for the most up-to-date information, as additional changes could be made based on evolving conditions.
