North Carolina school closings and delays for Friday

0

NORTH CAROLINA — Several school districts in the North Carolina mountains will operate on delayed schedules Friday, December 12, 2025, as overnight freezing temperatures and lingering snow are expected to leave roads slick, particularly on higher elevations and shaded routes.

Officials said the delays are necessary to give transportation crews additional time to assess and treat hazardous areas.

Avery County Schools and Mayland Community College both announced two-hour delays, citing widespread icy patches on secondary roads.

Mitchell County Schools, Yancey County Schools, and Madison County Schools will also operate on two-hour delays, with each district noting that no buses will run on icy roads, a precaution commonly taken in steep or rural mountain terrain.

School leaders encouraged families to use caution during the morning commute and to monitor additional updates in case conditions worsen overnight. The delays mark the latest weather-related disruptions in the region as winter conditions persist throughout the week.
