North Carolina corrections officer arrested after attempting to smuggle drugs into prison

NORTH CAROLINA — A Nash County corrections officer was arrested after deputies say she attempted to smuggle drugs into a state prison.

According to the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, deputies conducted a probable cause search of 37-year-old Shanese Sanders’ vehicle and found 0.2 pounds of the synthetic cannabinoid K2 and 0.04 pounds of suboxone. The drugs were wrapped in clear plastic and discovered inside her car.

The investigation began after the Nash Correctional Institution notified the sheriff’s office that Sanders was allegedly attempting to bring the drugs inside the prison to deliver them to an inmate.

Sanders, of Enfield, faces multiple felony charges, including:

  • Possession with intent to sell or distribute synthetic cannabinoid
  • Conspiracy to deliver synthetic cannabinoid
  • Possession with intent to sell or distribute a Schedule III controlled substance
  • Conspiracy to sell or deliver a Schedule III controlled substance
  • Two counts of possession of a controlled substance on prison premises

According to the sheriff’s office, Sanders posted a $70,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on Saturday.
