VIRGINIA — Virginia experienced another round of traffic crashes during the weekend winter storm, including one fatal incident, according to the Virginia State Police.

As of 6 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, state troopers had responded to 177 crashes across the commonwealth. Of those, 14 involved injuries and one was fatal. The deadly crash occurred in Northern Virginia.

Police said the fatal crash happened around 8:24 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County and involved a tractor-trailer and a sedan. Officials said precipitation had not yet begun at the time of the crash, and weather was not considered a factor. The incident remains under investigation.

Troopers reported that 38 of the total crashes occurred in Central Virginia, with one resulting in injuries. Between 9:30 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday alone, police responded to 117 crashes as wintry weather moved into the region.

Virginia State Police urged motorists to stay off the roads throughout Sunday and into Monday if possible. Drivers who must travel are advised to give space to trucks and Virginia Department of Transportation crews working to treat roadways. Police also warned that the winter storm could slow emergency response times for stranded motorists.
