TENNESSEE — Multiple crashes on Interstate 840 forced lane closures and caused significant traffic delays early Wednesday morning in the Gladeville area, according to authorities.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the incidents, which were first reported around 7 a.m., the Tennessee Department of Transportation said.

The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that several crashes occurred on I-840 near mile marker 71 and resulted in serious injuries. The number of people injured and the extent of those injuries were not immediately released.

As a result of the crashes, I-840 East was temporarily shut down, and traffic was diverted off the interstate at Stewarts Ferry Pike. Westbound traffic was reduced to one lane, creating major delays in both directions.

One eastbound lane reopened around 9 a.m., but traffic remained backed up for several miles as crews continued to work the scene and investigate the crashes.
