Multiple schools in West Virginia could close next week

WEST VIRGINIA — West Virginia schools in several counties could see delays or closures early next week as the state prepares for its first widespread snowfall of the season.

The National Weather Service says temperatures are expected to drop sharply Sunday night, with lows falling into the 20s Monday and Tuesday. The drop in temperatures could bring snow to many areas, particularly in the state’s higher elevations.

Forecasters expect most locations to receive only a light dusting — less than half an inch — but there is a small chance that some mountain areas could pick up between 2 to 3 inches of accumulation.

Those higher-risk areas stretch from Preston County south through Greenbrier County and into parts of the coalfields in the southern region.

While the National Weather Service does not anticipate a major winter storm, even light snowfall could create slick roads, especially during Monday morning’s commute when school buses are running.

School officials in affected counties may decide to issue delays or closures depending on how the conditions develop overnight.

Snow is expected to begin around 9 p.m. Sunday in higher elevation communities such as Snowshoe, with the rest of the state seeing possible snow between midnight and early Monday morning.

Parents and students are advised to monitor announcements from local school districts late Sunday and early Monday.
