WEST VIRGINIA — Students and families across West Virginia are facing school closures Tuesday, January 20, as dangerously cold temperatures and severe wind chills are expected to impact the state.
According to the West Virginia Department of Education’s official school closings and delays list, multiple county school systems have already reported closures for Tuesday.
Among those closed are schools in Doddridge, Hardy, Marshall, Tyler, and Wetzel counties. Several other counties, including Fayette, Harrison, Mercer, Monongalia, Nicholas, Preston, Randolph, Taylor, Tucker, and Upshur, are also listed with closures or adjusted schedules posted as of Monday evening.
The closures come as much of the region is under cold weather advisories, with forecasts calling for bitterly low temperatures, wind chill values below zero, and a frigid start to the week.
Reports from local weather services warn that Tuesday will be one of the coldest days of the winter season so far, with temperatures struggling to rise above the teens and wind chills at times plunging well below zero, posing a risk for frostbite and hypothermia.
Families are encouraged to check the West Virginia Education Information System (WVEIS) school closings page for the latest updates on delays and cancellations as additional announcements are expected throughout the evening and early Tuesday morning.
