Multiple schools in Virginia announce closures for Tuesday

VIRGINIA — Many school divisions and private institutions across Virginia will close or operate on delays Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2025, due to winter weather.

The largest number of closures is reported across Central, Southside and Southwest Virginia.

In the Richmond region, Chesterfield County Public Schools, Hanover County Public Schools, Henrico County Public Schools, Richmond Public Schools, Colonial Heights Public Schools and Hopewell City Public Schools will all be closed.

Amelia County Schools, Appomattox Governor’s School, Buckingham County Schools, Brunswick County Schools, Charles City County Schools, Charlotte County Public Schools, Dinwiddie County Schools, Essex County Schools, Fuqua School, Prince Edward County Schools, Prince George County Schools, Powhatan County Schools and Surry County Schools are also among those closed.

Additional private schools closing include Buford Road Christian Academy, Grove Christian School, Hanover Academy, Kenston Forest School, Landmark Christian School, Our Lady of Lourdes, Richmond Christian School, Richmond Waldorf School, St. Benedict School, St. Edward Epiphany Catholic School, St. James Children’s Center, St. Mary’s Episcopal School and The Steward School.

The Academy of Academic Excellence and The Steward School will open two hours late.

Across Southwest and Southside Virginia, numerous school divisions will close, including Allegany Highlands Public Schools, Amherst County Schools, Bath County Schools, Bedford County Schools, Botetourt County Schools, Buena Vista City Schools, Campbell County Schools, Charlotte County Schools, Carroll County Public Schools, Craig County Schools, Danville City Schools, Floyd County Public Schools, Franklin County Schools.

Also Galax City Schools, Grayson County Schools, Halifax County Schools, Henry County Schools, Highland County Schools, Lynchburg City Schools, Montgomery County Schools, Nelson County Public Schools, Pulaski County Schools, Radford City Schools, Roanoke City Public Schools, Roanoke County Public Schools, Rockbridge County Schools, Smyth County Schools, Wythe County Public Schools and Pittsylvania County Schools.

Several school systems will move to virtual learning or remote instruction, including Bland County Schools, Carlisle School, Giles County Schools and Pittsylvania County Schools.

Far Southwest Virginia will continue to see delays instead of closures in some districts. Dickenson County Schools, Lee County Schools, Norton City Schools, Scott County Schools, Washington County Schools and Wise County Schools will open on a two-hour delay.

School officials advise families to monitor local announcements for any additional schedule changes.
