Multiple schools in Virginia announce closures for Monday

VIRGINIA — Schools across Virginia are announcing closures, delays and changes to learning plans for Monday, Feb. 2, 2026, as crews continue to grapple with snow, ice and freezing temperatures leftover from a recent winter storm.

Major District Closures and Changes

Several large school systems in Northern Virginia are canceling classes entirely on Monday because road and sidewalk conditions remain hazardous:

  • Arlington Public Schools will remain closed again Monday after being shut down through the end of last week due to unsafe travel conditions. Staff and students will not attend in-person classes, and the district plans for a delayed opening on Tuesday.
  • Fairfax County Public Schools also canceled classes Monday, citing lingering ice and snow on sidewalks and at bus stops that could endanger students and staff. The district hopes to reopen Tuesday with a delayed start, officials said.
  • Prince William County Public Schools announced Monday will be a workday for staff, and students will not attend school or virtual classes. Officials are planning for students to return Tuesday with a two-hour delay as conditions improve.

Other Districts

In addition to the major systems above, numerous other divisions across the region reported closures, virtual learning days, or delays for Monday. Details varied by locality as superintendents assessed conditions at school sites, bus routes and walking paths.

Weather and Safety Factors

The decisions come after a winter storm left significant snow and ice across much of Virginia.

Even as temperatures edge above freezing in some areas, many roads and especially sidewalks remain covered, making travel unsafe for buses, pedestrians and families. Meteorologists have stressed that melting and refreezing could produce slippery conditions through the start of the week.

School officials and transportation departments are continuing cleanup efforts and will update schedules if conditions change. Parents and students are encouraged to check directly with their local school division for the most current information.
