TEXAS — Following a significant winter storm and deep freeze that brought freezing rain, ice and hazardous travel conditions across much of Texas, school districts statewide are issuing a wide range of closures, delayed start times and reopenings for Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026. Decisions vary by region based on lingering ice on roads and extreme cold warnings.
Central Texas: Widespread Closures
Numerous school districts in the Greater Austin area have announced full closures Tuesday because of icy road conditions and continued cold:
- Austin ISD — Closed on Tuesday.
- Blanco ISD — Closed Tuesday.
- Burnet CISD — Closed Tuesday.
- Del Valle ISD — Closed Tuesday.
- Dripping Springs ISD — Closed Tuesday.
- Eanes ISD — Closed Tuesday.
- Elgin ISD, Georgetown ISD, Hays CISD, Hutto ISD, Lake Travis ISD, Lago Vista ISD, Leander ISD, Liberty Hill ISD, Manor ISD, and Round Rock ISD have also canceled classes Tuesday in the Austin region.
Some districts in the region are opting for two-hour delays instead of full closures:
- Lexington ISD — two-hour delayed start.
- San Antonio ISD and San Marcos CISD — delayed starts Tuesday.
North Texas: Closures Across Smaller Districts
In North and West Texas, many smaller rural districts are also reporting closures due to ongoing winter weather impacts (as conditions remain icy with extreme cold warnings still in place):
- Archer City ISD, Bowie ISD, Burkburnett ISD, Wichita Falls ISD, Knox City ISD, Seymour ISD, Electra ISD and numerous other small independent school districts have announced closures Tuesday.
These closures reflect persistent ice on rural roadways and travel hazards, particularly in and around the Wichita Falls and Texas Big Country areas.
Houston / Southeast Texas: Mixed Plans
In the Houston area, several districts that were closed on Monday due to the winter storm are reopening on Tuesday with regular schedules:
- Houston ISD (HISD) will resume normal operations Tuesday after winter weather closures and preparations to ensure facilities and buses are ready.
- Alvin ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Dickinson ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Pearland ISD, Klein ISD, Katy ISD, Aldine ISD, Conroe ISD and Cypress-Fairbanks ISD have also announced they will open Tuesday.
However, Goodrich ISD will operate on a two-hour delay while Tarkington ISD has canceled classes Tuesday due to infrastructure issues from the storm.
Midland and West Texas Responses
In Midland and surrounding West Texas, several school systems and colleges—including Midland ISD and Andrews ISD—have closed for Tuesday due to hazardous travel conditions. Some institutions, such as Fort Stockton ISD and St. Ann’s Catholic School, are opting for delayed schedules instead of full closures.
Weather and Safety Context
The broader January 2026 North American winter storm brought snow and ice to parts of Texas and left icy roads, extremely cold temperatures and some power outages across the state. Road closures and refreezing overnight conditions influenced districts’ decisions to cancel or delay classes.
