Multiple schools in Tennessee to close next week

TENNESSEE — Most public schools across Tennessee are expected to be closed in observance of Good Friday in 2026, based on district calendars from across the state.

Good Friday falls on April 3, 2026. While Tennessee does not require a uniform statewide school holiday schedule, individual districts typically align their academic calendars to recognize the day as a holiday or include it within a broader spring break.

Several districts have explicitly listed Good Friday as a no-school day. For example, Knox County Schools shows April 3 as a “holiday,” with schools closed systemwide. Rutherford County Schools also lists Good Friday as a day when schools are closed, and similar designations appear in other district calendars across the state.

Other systems may not label the day specifically as “Good Friday,” but still have no classes because it falls within spring break or a scheduled holiday period. Districts such as Franklin County Schools and others schedule spring break around late March and early April, effectively giving students the day off.

Recent decisions in some areas further highlight the trend. In at least one district, school leaders voted to make Good Friday a full holiday for students and staff, changing it from a partial day to a full closure.

Because Tennessee school calendars are set locally, there is no centralized statewide list of closures. However, a review of multiple district calendars shows a clear pattern: the majority of public schools across Tennessee will be closed on Good Friday 2026, either as a designated holiday or as part of spring break.

Families are advised to check with their local district for exact schedules, as a small number of systems may structure their calendars differently.
