Multiple schools in Tennessee announce closures for Tuesday

TENNESSEE — Winter weather will affect school schedules across Northeast Tennessee on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2025.

Multiple school districts announced closures or delayed start times due to cold conditions and the potential for icy roads.

Carter County Schools will be closed for the day. Johnson County Schools, serving the Mountain City area, will also close. Both districts cited safety concerns over travel conditions.

Other districts will operate on a delay. Greene County Schools will open two hours late, allowing extra time for buses to safely travel morning routes. Sullivan County Schools in the Blountville area and Washington County Schools in Jonesborough will also begin the school day two hours later than usual.

School officials in all affected counties are encouraging families to check district communication channels for any additional changes should weather conditions worsen overnight.
