Multiple schools in South Carolina to close this week

SOUTH CAROLINA — Most public schools across South Carolina are expected to be closed in observance of Good Friday in 2026, based on a review of district calendars statewide.

Good Friday falls on April 3, 2026. While South Carolina does not mandate a single statewide school holiday calendar, local school districts independently set their schedules. However, calendars from across the state show a consistent pattern: many schools will not hold classes that day.

Several districts are closed because Good Friday is built into spring break. In Lexington County School District One, spring break runs through April 3, meaning students are already out of school on Good Friday.

Kershaw County School District similarly lists spring break from March 30 through April 3, with no classes on Good Friday. Marion County School District also shows April 3 as part of spring break, with schools closed.

Other districts explicitly reference the holiday. Orangeburg County School District lists “Good Friday” on April 3 alongside the start of spring break, confirming no school for students. In Richland School District Two, April 3 is designated a “staff work day/student holiday,” meaning students are off for the day.

Because South Carolina school calendars are determined locally, there is no centralized statewide list of closures. Still, a statewide composite of district calendars shows that many systems either close specifically for Good Friday or include the day within spring break.

Overall, district schedules indicate a clear trend: the majority of public schools across South Carolina will be closed on Good Friday 2026, either as a designated holiday or because it falls within spring break.

Families are advised to check with their local district for exact schedules, as a small number of systems may structure their academic calendars differently.
