Multiple schools in South Carolina could close this week

SOUTH CAROLINA — A widespread frost advisory across South Carolina could lead to school delays or closures Thursday morning as temperatures drop to near-freezing levels.

The National Weather Service has issued the advisory for much of the state, warning that temperatures could fall to around 33 degrees overnight into early Thursday.

The advisory is expected to be in effect from midnight or early morning hours until about 9 a.m., covering areas including Columbia, Florence and surrounding communities.

Forecasters say the cold conditions will allow frost to develop on exposed surfaces, potentially creating hazardous travel conditions during the morning commute. Bridges and elevated roadways may become slick, and frost on windshields could reduce visibility.

School districts across affected counties are expected to monitor conditions overnight and may adjust schedules, including delayed start times or closures, particularly in rural areas where students wait outdoors or travel long distances by bus.

While no widespread closures had been announced as of Wednesday evening, officials say decisions will likely be made early Thursday based on road conditions and temperatures.

The National Weather Service is advising residents to take precautions, including protecting sensitive plants and preparing for cold early-morning conditions.

The advisory remains in effect through Thursday morning.
